How A Registered Trademark Will Actually Save you Money

Starting, growing, or scaling a business is exciting.  Choosing a name, your brand colors, fonts, creating a website, etc.  You committed to creating a brand that represents you and your mission in the most perfect way.  You work hard to promote your brand, provide important value, and build a reputation and brand equity that you are proud of.

But then you realize something.  Someone else in your industry is using a similar name.  And similar colors, fonts, and graphics.  They have a website name that is strangely similar to yours.  You start to notice that people are getting confused between who is who and who they are actually trying to hire.

So, what can you do about it?  Well, if you were forward thinking and went ahead before you even started your business, or as you began to grow, and registered your business name with the USPTO and had a registered trademark, it would be pretty easy to get that person to stop infringing on your brand.

But what if you didn’t.  What do you do with the person who is copying your brand and stealing your brand equity and ultimately money out of your pocket?  You can:

  1.  Rebrand: $1,500

  2. New Website:  $5,000

  3. New graphics/social media: $1,000

  4. New packaging, materials, etc.: $A lot!

  5. Having to rebuild your brand equity:  A lot of time, money and effort!

Or, you can file a trademark.  You can make sure you protect your brand starting right now!  The good news is getting a registered trademark will protect you from the date which you filed and/or started your business so you can be sure no one can swoop in after you and steal your business name and brand equity.

Is filing a trademark an investment (especially when you do it the right way and hire an attorney), yes.  But is it worth it?  YES.  It will not only protect everything you have worked for in building a brand but it will also save you money and give you peace of mind in the long run.
