Do I Need a Privacy Policy on my Website?
Yes, 100%. Privacy policies are required by law to be on every website that collects information from its users. That includes if you use google analytics, a facebook pixel, emails, etc., the list goes on and on.
This requirement is in place to protect the consumer (you when you are on someone elses site!) and the governmental body that regulates this is the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is not scared to enforce this privacy policy requirement and has done so for businesses both large and small.
So here is what you need to know about privacy policies…
Your privacy policy should let the user know how you are collecting the data. Are you using cookies, a form, or another way? This needs to be transparent to the user.
Your privacy policy should let the user know how you are storing the information and for how long. It should also make them aware of where you are storing their personal information.
Your privacy policy should address who has access to your information. Is it just the company whose site you are on or do they share your information?
Lastly, you want your privacy policy to include the security measures you are taking to protect your users information.
There are also specific regulations and acts you must follow and include in your privacy policy, those include California’s Online Privacy Protection Act, GDPR, the Children’s Online Protection Rule, among others.
Although this seems like a lot and can be overwhelming, making sure to have a privacy policy in place on your site is imperative when it comes to building and protecting your business.
